With the recent heat wave, the Children’s Trust Fund (CTF) of Massachusetts reminds parents and the public not to leave their children alone in cars... not even for a minute. Children left unattended in hot cars during the summer months are at risk of dehydration, hyperthermia, heat stroke and even death.
Heat builds up rapidly in a vehicle, even with windows slightly rolled down. On a 90-degree day, the temperature inside a closed car can reach 120 degrees in 10 minutes and 110 degrees even if windows are left slightly open, according to a University of San Francisco report.
A child’s body heats up three to five times as quickly as an adult’s. If a child’s body temperature exceeds 104 degrees, heat stroke can cause delirium, convulsions, coma and death, according to a study published in Pediatrics magazine.
